Dental suction

Dental suction is one of the essential devices for dental centers or dental clinics. This device is equipped with a tube whose head is placed inside the patient’s mouth and helps the dentist in performing oral and dental work. This causes the treatment area to be emptied of fluids and waste from medical activities so that the patient can undergo a successful and clean treatment period.

Types of dental suction

Generally, three types of suction are used in dentistry, which are:

  • Dental water suction
Water suction drains the remaining fluids and saliva collected inside the patient’s mouth so that the doctor can more easily perform the relevant treatment work.
  • Dental air suction
Air suction is held inside the patient’s mouth by the dental assistant to collect particles from the patient’s teeth or materials and direct them out of the oral environment.
  • Electric dental suction
Electric suction is a new type of dental suction. It has better performance in terms of power consumption, suction power, and the presence of features such as fuses and protective sensors, antibacterial filters, drain switches, etc. compared to other types of suction.
  • Central suction or mobile suction
In another classification of types of dental suction, we come to central or fixed suctions and portable or mobile suctions.

Central suctions are usually used for heavy surgeries, which are very efficient and guarantee the best possible support for a heavy and long-term surgery.

On the other hand, portable suction can be used in some dental surgeries. This type of suction device is portable and movable, and there is usually an example of it in every dental office.

Application of dental suction

Why should we place the suction tube in the patient’s mouth for a long time? While we know that this really causes discomfort and annoyance to our patient. But the use of dental suction is unavoidable for several reasons:

The anesthetic that the doctor injects into the patient’s gums is bitter and irritating. It may also cause nausea in the patient. Therefore, in order not to bother the patient and eliminate this undesirable condition during treatment, the fluids accumulated in the patient’s mouth are removed using a suction device to reduce his discomfort.

For greater comfort and a more successful surgery, the doctor needs to remove fluids, tooth chips, particles of materials used in tooth restoration, saliva and any other excess material from his path. So that he can continue his work with better control and mastery.

In a series of stages of performing dental treatment services, the patient’s mouth must be completely dry so that the doctor can do his work with better quality and satisfy the patient. Another use of dental suction is to dry the patient’s mouth for surgery.

The mouth, gums and in general any part that the doctor is repairing may bleed. Therefore, to prevent blood from accumulating in the mouth, it is recommended to use a suction device.

A dental drill always uses some water to keep it cool. In other words, when working with a dental drill, some water is always sprayed into the patient’s mouth; if this water accumulated inside the patient’s mouth is not removed, it will cause nausea. It will also cause discomfort to the dentist. Therefore, the suction device removes the water poured into the mouth from it in parallel with the drill’s work.

Where does the suction tube take the waste fluids?

Perhaps this question has been asked to you out of curiosity: After the suction tube sucks the saliva into the mouth along with tooth fragments, amalgam, and other materials, where does it transfer them? In fact, the path of all these waste materials ends in a separator.

This separator separates all solids from liquids in the suction. The liquids are then transferred to the sewage system. Of course, our advice to dentists when purchasing and installing a suction device is to always use an amalgam separator to prevent them from entering the sewage system.
