What is a blood glucose meter?
A blood glucose meter is a fingerstick device that takes a drop of blood from your finger and places it on a special paper. You can then use the device to see the level of glucose in your blood. Most blood glucose meters allow you to save your results, and you can use an app on your phone to track your blood sugar levels. You should bring your meter, phone, or written record with you every time you visit your doctor.
How to use a blood glucose meter
There are many different types of blood glucose meters, but most work in the same way. You can ask your doctor how to use the meter first, or read on. Here are some tips on how to use a blood glucose meter.
- Make sure the meter is clean and ready to use.
- After removing a test strip, close the test strip container tightly immediately. Test strips may be damaged if exposed to moisture.
- Wash your hands with soap and warm water and dry thoroughly. Massage your hand to get the blood into your finger. Do not use alcohol as it will overdry the skin.
- Use the lancet to prick your finger. Gently apply a small amount of blood to the test strip by pressing the bottom of your finger and insert it into the meter.
- After a few seconds, a number will appear on the screen. Track and record your results. Write down anything that may affect your test result, such as food, activity, etc.
- Dispose of the lancet properly in a trash can.
- Do not share blood glucose monitoring device parts such as the lancet with anyone, even other family members. For more safety information, please see Preventing Infection When Monitoring Blood Glucose and Administering Insulin.
- Store test strips in the container provided. Do not expose them to moisture, extreme heat, or low temperatures
Benefits of Using a Glucometer
In general, the main benefits associated with a glucometer include:
- Maintaining a healthy blood sugar range
- Avoiding emergencies due to very high or very low blood sugar
- Long-term success with blood sugar control leads to fewer complications, such as heart, kidney, or eye disease.
Most people with diabetes check their blood sugar levels daily, but before home blood sugar monitoring became easy, this process required frequent visits to the doctor or hospital.
Types of Blood Glucose Meters
There are two main types of devices for checking your blood sugar. These types of glucometers and how they work differ, and choosing the best one for you depends on your specific situation. The two main types of glucometers are:
Standard blood sugar meters with a needle, which are used to check your blood sugar at a specific moment
Continuous glucose monitors, which check your blood sugar all the time and do not have a needle. These devices work by placing a sensor under the skin.
