Uses of a neck brace

Neck braces come in hard and soft types.

• Soft Neck Braces

Soft medical collars are made of materials such as foam, plastic, or felt. These collars fit around the patient’s neck and jaw in a mold and are sized to fit the patient. However, these medical collars do not completely immobilize the neck, but they do reduce movement and serve as a reminder for the patient to minimize neck movement. Since these collars are placed under the chin and support the chin, they counteract the contraction of the muscles contracting against gravity and help keep the head in a normal position. These types of collars do not completely immobilize the neck, they only reduce the flexion and extension in the final stage. These collars fit completely around the neck and limit sweating.

• Semi-rigid medical collar

• Halo Neck Brace

The halo brace has a metal ring that supports the head using metal pins. This ring is attached to 4 rods in a weighted vest (the weight of the halo vest varies). You should wear the halo brace full-time until you are healed.
