Types of scalpel and scalpel blade

A scalpel, which is another name for a scalpel, is a single-use blade made of tungsten carbide. This blade is the most common tool for cutting tissue, especially the skin. Bisturi blades in terms of appearance and different edges are in numbers 10, 10A, 12, 11, 12B, 12D, 13, 15, 14, 15A, 15C, 15D , 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and… are available. Important points regarding the scalpel

• No. 10 scalpel is considered the most common type, which is mainly used to open the skin.

• No. 11 scalpel is used to make deep cuts in delicate tissues. It is also used in vascular surgeries.

• No. 12 scalpel is mostly used in tonsillectomy (a type of ear and throat surgery).

• Because of its small blade, scalpel No. 15 is mostly used to make small skin incisions.

• Bisturi No. 20 is the same as Bisturi No. 10, except that it has a larger size.

• No. 21, 22, 22A, 23, 24, 25 scalpels are used for skin incision in thick areas such as thighs.

• A needle holder should be used to fit the blades of the scalpel on its handle. It is not correct to use fingers to insert the blades.
