Microset or IV infusion set

Most infusion sets are made of PVC material to ensure high strength, ease of sealing, resistance to sterilization methods and are relatively more cost-effective. Based on the purpose of use, IV infusion sets are divided into two types:

Microdrip set: This infusion set is used for pediatric patients and certain adult patients who need small and precisely regulated doses of IV solution because it delivers a small amount with each drop.

Macrodrip set: This set infuses large amounts of IV solution at a rapid rate because it delivers a large amount of solution with each drop.

Main components of an IV infusion set

IV infusion sets are divided into two main categories based on the type of fluid. One is for blood transfusion and the other is for giving non-blood products such as saline. There are different types of these two types of cores. However, the main components of an IV set that remain constant across all variations are:

• Long sterile tubing
• Interface
• Drip chamber
• V-Track controller
• Spike

The spike is pierced and placed into a sterile bottle containing pre-filled IV solution. The clear drip chamber allows fluid to flow one drop at a time, making it easy to observe the flow rate. The long sterile tubing with the V-track controller helps control the flow rate.

The IV set has a connector that can be attached to an access device. Y-sets, T-sets, and V-sets are three-way connectors with different shapes that allow an additional infusion set to be attached to the same line for the delivery of antibiotics or other continuous fluid drips.

Microset IV infusion sets are an integral part of intravenous therapy, which is one of the most common treatment alternatives for various health conditions.
