Silk Sutures
Silk sutures are produced from silkworm larvae, and their structure contains the protein fibroin, and their advantages set the standard for other sutures. Silk is a natural non-absorbable suture material that is widely used for wound closure and is the most common natural suture, surpassing collagen and being used in the biomedical industry for the past 100 years. It is easy to work with, has excellent knotting properties, and is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction in the patient. While SUPASILK silk sutures are considered non-absorbable, they degrade and disappear within two years.
Its soft structure is comfortable for patients. On the negative side of silk sutures, it can be noted that silk tends to penetrate the cells it is sutured with, making it difficult and painful to remove. However, it is available with a silicone or special wax coating to limit capillaries. It is often used to suture mucous tissues or to close intertriginous areas. Silk is also useful as a temporary suture during surgery due to its easy handling.
SUPASILK silk sutures are available in multifilament and monofilament and can be used for tissue closure in dentistry, gastrointestinal and ophthalmic surgery, oral surgery and obstetrics.
This suture can also be used as a ligature for permanent and removable fixtures and in cardiovascular surgery (for suturing grafts). As a suture, SUPASILK silk suture is non-absorbable and is not recommended in urological procedures because it can facilitate the formation of stones around the suture, which is a characteristic of non-absorbable materials. In addition, it should not be used in contaminated or infection-prone areas. One of the main disadvantages of silk sutures is its poor antimicrobial properties.

Surgical thread is one of the main components of surgery and is very sensitive. Therefore, to prevent any infection and contamination of the body, all surgical instruments, especially the thread, must be kept clean. The instruments must also be healthy and unbroken. For example, a broken needle can cause injury to other organs of the body. It is recommended that the operation be performed with a single-stranded thread and that a uniform thread of the appropriate size be used for the suture. The size of the thread should cover the entire wound. Prolonged contact of the body with a foreign object such as a suture can cause damage or lead to infection. The doctor and, in general, people who use sutures should know all the conditions and techniques for using it. What type of thread should be used according to the type of wound and its location.
